Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? Yes, section on upgrading Joomla core
Have I searched the tickets before posting? NoYes
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? Yes - section on upgrading Joomla core
Joomla! version: 1.5.26
PHP version: 5.2.17
MySQL version: 5.0.86
Host: Midwest Marketing
Admin Tools version: 2.2.5

Description of my issue:
I tried to use the automatic updater to update Joomla! to 1.5.26, but got a "ERROR: Invalid login" alert. I then used Sam Moffat's update manager to update Joomla!

The AT updater has worked previously and works on another site set up the same way on the same host. Updating AT works as well. The error message appears regardless of whether I have set AT for direct file writing or for FTP uploading. The tmp directory is 755 and again, has worked previously.

The invalid login means that either a browser/network error occurred, or Admin Tools' directory is not writable.

After downloading the Joomla! update package and before extracting it, Admin Tools needs to write a small file containing an encryption key. The same key is sent to the browser. The communications between the browser and the extraction script are then encrypted with this key, to ensure that even in the case of a man in the middle attack, the attacker won't have a window of opportunity large enough to do anything malicious. However, if Admin Tools can't write the file with the encryption key, this method leads to the error you mentioned. Same goes if there is a network or Javascript error which corrupts/modifies the encrypted message.

Thanks. The Admin Tools directory is 755. I tried setting to 777 for testing purposes but it didn't make any difference. I've also tried with Safari as well as Firefox, from several different internet connections with no difference. Also, the error appears before anything has been downloaded. Any idea where to start looking for a cause for a network or browser error? Any other troubleshooting steps to take?

I tend to believe that you are not receiving an error message which makes Joomla! halt, you are receiving a Joomla! warning message because you have misconfigured your FTP settings. Please follow our documentation's instructions.

I'm quite sure the ftp settings are correct, and the behavior is the same whether I choose "Write directly to files" or "Upload using FTP."

There may be something else set wrong- when I try to remove an IP address from the Auto IP block list or Site IP blacklist, I get a 403 error. I have run the Fix Permissions and Repair and Optimise Tables tools multiple times to no effect.

Please try uninstalling Admin Tools, download a new installation package for Admin Tools 2.2.5 from our site (just in case there's something wrong with the one you already have) and install it on your site. Then, retry the Joomla! upgrade. Does it work now?

That fixed the 403 problem, but not the "Invalid login" error :-(

That's because the "invalid login" error is most likely not linked to Admin Tools, as I was saying in my previous reply. If you would post a screenshot I could tell you with much better accuracy what it is.
