Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? No
Have I searched the tickets before posting? Yes
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Joomla! version: 2.5.2
PHP version: 5.3.8
MySQL version: (unknown)
Host: Rochen
Admin Tools version: 2.2.0 Pro

Description of my issue:

Is there an issue with updating 2.5.1 to 2.5.2 with Admin Tools Pro? I read this on the J! forums:

"From what I read elsewhere, it looks like there is a known issue with Admin Tools from the Akeeba team that is causing some of the older version SQL updates to be re-run. From Nicholas' statement on his support system, it should be a one time error based on a change in the Admin Tools 2.2 release. This is why some folks are getting the second version module in admin or their blacklist data being reset."

Cheers,

Dave.

It's exactly as you read. not a big deal, it will simply cause the version footer module to appear twice on your site. After the update just go to manage modules, select administrator and remove the second Joomla! Version module. That's all.

Is that it?! I was concerned there may be more, as there have been a few reports of upgrades not working well and issues over Blacklists, etc.

Thanks for putting my mind at rest :)

Well, people always exaggerate. They only remember the last major thing they did before screwing up their site, not the very last step which DID screw their site. They also don't realise that updating from Joomla! 1.7 to 2.5 means that some extensions might break because their developers haven't updated them. And so they all end up either here or in Joomla! forum, saying that Admin Tools broke their site. It's like the "Joomla! is insecure because my site with 5 years old software and 0777 permissions on a crappy host got hacked" arguments. Meh.

You're absolutely right.

I do think though that in this case Joomla! didn't help much, by stating very clearly that people should upgrade to 2.5.0 immediately when it came out. I've still got several sites running 1.7.5 because the extensions haven't been updated and/or I can't find alternatives. It's certainly a minority of extensions now, but nevertheless, I know that if I simply hit the upgrade button things will probably break.

Joomla! is incredible, but I think that part was handled quite badly by the team and inexperienced users really do think you can just press a button and carry on..

Cheers,

Dave.

Yes, that's true. The funny thing is, most extensions wouldn't break if there weren't API changes after the beta freeze. That's how Admin Tools 2.1.x broke after I had tested it with 2.5.b1. There's been a long talk on the mailing lists regarding support policy, feature introduction and backwards compatibility maintenance, but I won't be holding my breath to see any of that being implemented in this lifetime ;)
