Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Have I searched the tickets before posting? Yes
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Joomla! version: (2.5.1)
PHP version: (5.2.4)
MySQL version: (5.1.41)
Host: (Hosting2go.nl)
Admin Tools version: (latest)

Description of my issue:

I am at the moment strugling with my site and this weekend I decided to buy Admin Tools Pro to see if it can help me. Now in the earlier version there was the possibility to reinstall Joomla through Admin Tools but now I can't find it anywere.
Is there a special reason for this or must I look under another button? The thing is that in the past this function helped me a lot so it would be nice to have this function again.

Thank you,

Regards,

Hi Roland,

The new versions of Joomla! require us to run post-installation scripts on top of extracting the files. If you try to run Joomla! 2.5.1's post-installation script after extracting Joomla! 2.5.1's files on top of a Joomla! 2.5.1 site you get a huge mess. As a result, reinstall without trouble is not possible. In order to support reinstall, I would have to do some modifications to the current update routine which had the potential of causing a lot of trouble during the next Joomla! update. Therefore, I decided to completely remove the feature instead of risking breaking your sites.

There is, however, an easy to use alternative if you really need to refresh/reinstall Joomla!'s files. You will be using our own versatile archive extraction script, Kickstart, using a similar procedure to restoring a backup (without the database setup and site reconfiguration steps):
  • Click on the link on the Joomla! update page to download the full installation package of your Joomla! release (i.e. 2.5.1).
  • Upload it to your site together with Kickstart.
  • Rename your .htaccess file to htaccess.bak
  • Run Kickstart to extract the file
  • Click on the "Run the Installer"
  • Immediately close the new window/tab, without going through the Joomla! installation procedure.
  • Back in Kickstart's window click on "Clean Up"

Hello thank you for the quick response! Well this is indeed also a way to reset the site and I will keep it in mind for the next time. To be sure; all the changes and looks are kept only the Joomla files are refreshed? Is it the same like you upload it with by example LiveZilla? In that case it didn't work for me because I tried that also but nothing changed.

I had solved my problem for the time being by reinstalling an older version of Admin Tools and used the supported reinstall there. This was before I knew about your advice but I will put that in action the next time.

This method works exactly as the (now defunct) "Reinstall" button, i.e. it only overwrites Joomla!'s core files. Database changes are not performed. If your problem stems from database issues, you will have to restore a backup of your site; reinstall will do nothing useful in this case. And, yes, it's the same as uploading the files with FileZilla, only faster :)

Then it is strange that your old function worked for me but overwriting with FileZilla didn't.....

When I used it my site reacted again as it should like I could make a menu again but with overwriting with LiveZilla I kept the problem.

I tend to suspect that you have a caching issue. Have you tried clearing your browser's cache, quit the browser and retry? It's the most common fix to this kind of issues, especially after a 2.5.0 to 2.5.1 upgrade :)

Well the problems are plaging me for a longer time now. My site gives after a while a 500 error and me some others are looking what is the cause. In the backend I had some trouble also but that occured yesterday and my computer went of this night.

The problem there was that I tried to save a article but Joomla made plain text out of it no matter what I tried. After using your great (but no longer supported feature ;=) which I can understand the reasons) it worked again as it should.

Ah, this is an unrelated feature of Joomla! 2.5! You have to go to your site's Global Configuration, click on Text Filters, set the filtering for Super Users (and any other user group which is trusted with back-end access) to Default Blacklist or No Filtering and Save the global configuration. Until you save it, Joomla! stupidly defaults to "No HTML", stripping out your HTML tags from your articles. This little feature cost me two hours of work last month :@

Headache? No, it was more of a fit of swearing, especially since it was on this (live!) site :)
