AdminTools has become my favorite single security solution, but I use it in combination with others in the hopes of getting more comprehensive filtering of attacks. Of course this introduces some redundancy and load, which is not ideal.

Are there recommended (or disrecommended) combinations of security extensions? Jeff Channell's tests and report on the comparative abilities of the major security extensions was realy helpful, but it is two years old now. I'd love to see an update to this. http://jeffchannell.com/2010-joomla-security-extension-comparison.html

Jeff's comparison is outdated. It was performed against a very old version of Admin Tools which didn't have 80% of the features it has today. If you compare different security products, you will see that Admin Tools already has all of the features of competitive products which make sense (there are some features in competitive which don't offer any security, I won't implement those). Moreover, all of the detection algorithms have been revamped. If you were to run Jeff's tests with Admin Tools Professional 2.2.0 you'd get 9/10 (the other 1/10 is something which Jeff itself admits that's impossible to block and extremely hard to replicate in the wild).

Running multiple security solutions does not offer better protection. It will simply give you bigger headaches. If you have 5 security solutions and something gets blocked when it shouldn't, which one caused it? Good luck with that. If you ask for my support and I see that you have multiple security extensions I will decline to help you because I can't know which security solution is causing this issue, therefore I can not guarantee the quality of my reply or ensure that I'm not wasting my time trying to figure out another developer's bug/feature.

Yes, I realize Jeff's comparison is 2 years old. That's why I was wondering if anyone has done or would be willing to do an updated test of a similar type, maybe just in comparison to RS Firewall or the more comparable OSE Anti-Hacker, neither of which I've ever tried. (No demo, or not very good demos + high prices.) Biziant had some cool, original features when it came out and some good UI design concepts, but it's still in alpha. Jeff says he hopes to reconstruct it as a platform-independent application.

In the past multiple security extensions made a certain amount of sense, since there were no really comprehensive solutions. Surprisingly, I never had problems with conflicts, and the better ones all send out email alerts and/or create logs that make it clear which one is blocking a request. Nowadays all I use (usually) is ATP, some anti-spam tools, and jMonitoring or hosted services like pingdom and websitedefender.
