I tried doing a couple of 1.7.4 to 2.5 updates this week using the Joomla update feature. Both failed with:

JInstaller: :Install: Error SQL DB function failed with error number 1060
Duplicate column name 'ordering' SQL=ALTER TABLE `jos_languages` ADD COLUMN `ordering` int(11) NOT NULL default 0 AFTER `published`;
SQL =

ALTER TABLE `#__languages` ADD COLUMN `ordering` int(11) NOT NULL default 0 AFTER `published`;

Files Update: SQL error file DB function failed with error number 1060

There doesn't seem to be a solution for this on the Joomla forums yet.

I have Akeeba Admin Tools 2.2.a3 installed on both the websites. Yesterday they would only offer an update to Joomla 1.7.4 but today they offered the 1.7.4 to 2.5 update so I gave it a try and the update worked flawlessly.

He he! I had the same problem on some of my own sites (mostly testing sites, but still...). So, I decided to do something easy: make Admin Tools handle the upgrade :)

Just for the record, I found out a workaround to the problems caused by the Joomla! installer. Turn off the System Debug in Global Configuration, run the update, log out, log back in, go to Extensions, Manage Extensions, Database, it will find some errors, click on Fix. Or screw all of that, just disable System Debug and use Admin Tools to upgrade ;)
