Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Have I searched the forum before posting? YES
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? YES
Joomla! version: 1.5.25
PHP version: i dont know
MySQL version: i think 5
Host: justhost.com
Admin Tools version: 2.1.13

Description of my issue:
after installing admintools pro and putting on all firewalls and .htaccess maker etc... when i try to now backup my website using akeeba backup (NOT PRO), it gives me this error which i never had before:
The backup operation has been halted because an error was detected.
The last error message was:

AJAX Loading Error
HTTP Status: 500 (Internal Server Error)
Internal status: error
XHR ReadyState: 4
Raw server response:

attached is the error log that i downloaded.

I also read about removing .htaccess etc.. i did that nad it didnt work.
and i cant add this PHP file to the server exeptions as its administrator.php? which means EVERYTHING in this extention would be allowed. unless i have to add that! if yes which of the 3 do i add it to, the php one or the other one that says everything but php files?

also this might help, i have a second site running the exact same as the above, however the second site works and the only difference is that i did NOT yet upgrade to the new version of akeeba backup. maybe the new version is causing something?

sorry forget to mention the one that works is Akeeba Backup Core3.3.7
the one with the problem is Akeeba Backup Core3.3.9

First things first. Installing Admin Tools Professional WILL NOT cause any problem with Akeeba Backup, simply because a. the Web Application Firewall protection does not apply to the back-end components b. Akeeba Backup is a native Joomla! component and DOES NOT need direct web access to its PHP files (I mean, for the love of God, do you think I would do what I tell other developers not to do?!) and c. They are of course tested together and installed together, especially on this site. So the two events seem to be completely unrelated.

Looking at your log file, I see nothing in it. This makes me think that the problem is a file permissions issue. First, please do try all seven troubleshooting steps. If this doesn't work, please give 0777 permissions to your administrator/components/com_akeeba/backup directory. This is safe, because that directory comes with a .htaccess file which disallows web access, therefore it can't be used to hack your site, despite the 0777 permissions.

Hi Nicholas,
I went through all the steps and I also changed the permissions and nothing helps.
the only thing that helped, i uninstalled the never version and reinstalled an older version and that works. the new version is giving me the error!
it might be something wrong in your new version!

i am very sorry, i didnt do the permissions correctly, i simply pushed on fix permissions and that didnt do it, i had to set the custom permission to that file to be 777 and now it works fine!
why dont you simply put that file to be automatically 777 from the fresh install? it would save alot of people the trouble that i just went through

Hi Mike,

Actually, Akeeba Backup does try to modify the permissions, but this is not always possible. If the directory is owned by the FTP user and your site's FTP mode (in Global Configuration) is either not enabled or the password is left blank, then Akeeba Backup can't possibly change the permissions. If it could do that, it would also be able to write to that directory, completely beating the purpose.

Moreover, Akeeba Backup tries to detect when the output directory is unwritable. If it detects that, it does print a big, red message telling you that your output directory is unwritable. On very few servers, however, this can't work. Unfortunately, you happen to have one of those rare hosts :(
