After upgrading to Joomla 4

Install Akeeba Backup 9 and migrate your settings and backups

  1. Go to our site's Compatibility page and download the version of Akeeba Backup 9 which is compatible with your version of Joomla and PHP.

    If you are not sure about your Joomla and PHP versions please go to System, System Information and look at the PHP Version and Joomla! Version rows.

  2. If there is no compatible version for your Joomla and PHP version but there is one for your Joomla version and a newer PHP version you will need to upgrade the PHP version on your site. Please ask your host on how to do that.

  3. Install the new Akeeba Backup version you downloaded (its version number begins with 9.). This is necessary, even if you had previously installed Akeeba Backup. This step is very important.

  4. From Joomla's sidebar menu click on Components, Akeeba Backup for Joomla!™, Control Panel.

  5. Towards the top of page, above the configuration and action controls, you will see an area titled "Migrate your settings from an older Akeeba Backup version". Click on the Migrate settings button and follow the instructions on your screen (essentially, click a button). This will migrate your settings from the old version of Akeeba Backup to the new one.

Remove Akeeba Backup 8

  1. Go to System, Manage, Extensions.

  2. Search for Akeeba Backup package.

  3. Find the item whose version begins with 8. and select it by ticking the checkbox next to it. DO NOT SELECT THE OTHER ITEM (Akeeba Backup 9).

  4. From the toolbar, select Uninstall.

Re-enable plugins

  1. Go to System, Manage, Plugins

  2. Re-enable whichever of the following plugins were enabled in your Joomla 3 site (you noted that down in a previous step):

    • Action Log - Akeeba Backup

    • Quick Icon - Akeeba Backup Notification

    • System - Backup on update

Remove FOF and FEF

Our Joomla 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 2.5 and 3.x versions of our software used our backend (FOF) and frontend (FEF) frameworks. These frameworks are no longer used by our Joomla 4 software. After upgrading all of our (Akeeba) software to their Joomla 4 versions you can remove them from your site.

[Important]Important

Some third party extensions may still be using these frameworks despite the fact that they became unsupported on Joomla 4 since August 2021 and we had issued a deprecation warning since mid-2020.

If you are not sure, take a full backup of your site before uninstalling FOF and FEF.

  1. Go to System, Manage, Extensions

  2. Search for file_fef.

  3. Select the item and click on Uninstall.

  4. Search for FOF.

  5. Select whichever of the following items which are present and click on Uninstall:

    • FOF with a version number which begins with 2.. This is a very old version of the FOF framework which we stopped developing in April 2015 and became End of Life in June 2016. It was included with Joomla 3.2–3.10.

    • file_fof30 with a version number which begins with 3.. This is an older version of FOF which we were using between April 2015 and August 2021.

    • file_fof40 with a version number which begins with 4.. This is the last FOF version we have published, used since August 2021 for our Joomla 3 software.
